What we do

Because They Matter is a guest-host and virtual-visit program. We sit with older adults at a lunch that already exists. We also visit on the guest’s own phone, tablet, or computer. The work is a real conversation, not a new meal service.

What we do: Sit at an existing lunch table of about 8 to 12 people. Come back. Learn names. Stay for the meal that is already on the table. Offer a virtual visit when a guest wants company on a device they already have. Year 1 is simple: public lunch tables at senior centers, churches, NAM, and Interfaith, plus virtual visits on the guest’s own device.

What we are not: We are not a food-drop. We are not Meals on Wheels. We do not deliver meals. We do not put a device in someone’s home. We do not replace a kitchen or a dining program. If what you need is food, keep using the people who already feed the table. Invite us when you want another person in the chair.

Who this is for: Table leads: You already have a lunch hour and a table. We add a guest who is there to talk, not to present. Hosts: You have an hour and a willingness to sit with people. We match you to a table or to a virtual visit. Families: If someone you love is eating with less company than they used to, tell us.
